How to Write a Resume Summary That Is Specific

A resume summary earns attention when it gives a reader a useful frame for the experience that follows. It is not a list of personality traits or every skill you possess.

Start with professional direction

Name the discipline, level or role direction you want the reader to understand. If you are changing careers, connect the direction to the transferable experience that supports it.

Add meaningful scope

Scope could include an industry, the size of a team, portfolio responsibility, customer segment, geography, or the kind of work you own. This prevents the summary from sounding interchangeable.

Use proof sparingly

One or two credible results can make a summary more persuasive. Use outcomes that are relevant to the target—not a long sequence of unsupported superlatives.

Avoid the adjective pile-up

Phrases such as motivated, dynamic and results-driven rarely differentiate a candidate by themselves. Let selected facts demonstrate those qualities instead.
